Pech-Merle

For the history lovers

* As you explore the region you will come across many small hamlets and traditional farms that also help make the region so appealing, as well as pigeonniers and the many washing and drinking places. The Parc naturel régional du Quercy was erected to protect this heritage. This region of sheep and goat breeding extends over 176.000 hectares and includes Labastide-Murat. The typical and very charming features of this protected park are dry lawns seperated by low stone walls, beautiful buildings and delightful little dry-stone shepherd huts.

* You can find relics of the Hundred Years' war (1337 - 1453) between France and England, in Autoire, Bouzies and Sauliac-sur-Célé.

* So many bastides and medieval towns are worthwhile visiting: Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Gourdon, Loubressac, Cahors, Rocamadour, Carennac, ... .

* It is the soft limestone and the rivers that have given rise to the large number of caves. In some of them they found proof of life of the Cro Magnon men and even of Neanderthal men. There are parietal wall paintings found in Lascaux - also named The Sistine Chapel - and Pech-Merle. In the Phosphatieres at Bach are even ancient fossils discovered.

* The Midi-Pyrénées is also known as the 'region of 100 castles', numerous castles were build: Assier, Castelau-Bretenoux, Najac, ... in this region we open the door to history!
